Guys weekend getaways in California

Jan. 20, 2018

From skiing down the slopes at world-renowned ski resorts to playing 18 holes at famous golf courses, California boasts endless activities for those planning a manly escape. Here are some top activities for a group of guys planning a weekend getaway in California.

Shasta Cascade
For the group looking to dive deep into the great outdoors, start your getaway in Butte County. Known as 'California’s Last Frontier', Butte County combines year-round, outdoor recreation with a booming craft beer scene. As you explore rivers, waterfalls, mountains and jutting cliffs, it becomes the obvious choice for any stag weekend, birthday rel="noopener noreferrer" party or manly escape. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico, referred to as the birthplace of California Beer, offers regular facility tours and tastings.

Gold rel="noopener noreferrer" Country
Not far from Butte County, Placer County also boasts thrilling outdoor recreation perfect for a guys’ trip. Start rel="noopener noreferrer" your adventure with world-class snow sports at Lake Tahoe or rafting on the American River. After a day of heart-pumping excitement, head down the rel="noopener noreferrer" hill to historic Auburn and experience a distilled rel="noopener noreferrer" spirit tasting at California Distilled Spirits or visit a boutique winery on the Placer County Wine & Ale Trail.

High Sierra
Start your manly adventure through the high sierras any time of the year at North rel="noopener noreferrer" Lake Tahoe, where you can find world-class ski resorts and historic golf courses where celebrities have been spotted walking the fairways. rel="noopener noreferrer" Don’t forget to explore the North Lake Tahoe Ale Trail by way of mountain bike, kayak rel="noopener noreferrer" or hiking. Just south of Yosemite rel="noopener noreferrer" National Park is Mammoth Lakes, a 'man mecca' with miles of forest to hike and explore. The crew could hit the slopes rel="noopener noreferrer" of Mammoth Mountain and end rel="noopener noreferrer" the day with a beer at Black Doubt or Mammoth Brewing Company.

San Francisco Bay Area
For the guys planning a stay in the San rel="noopener noreferrer" Francisco Bay Area, start off by exploring wine country. Napa Valley boasts eight public golf courses ranging from casual nine holes to a PGA-hosting rel="noopener noreferrer" 18 at Silverado Resort, miles of hiking and cycling rel="noopener noreferrer" trails, several craft breweries and taprooms, two cigar lounges and several late-night music spots. In Sonoma, there’s kayaking on the Russian River, hiking through Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve and golfing at The Links at Bodega Harbour. Then head down to San Francisco for the 10th annual SF rel="noopener noreferrer" Beer Week. From 9-18 Feb, hundreds of events are taking place from elite festivals and casual how-to-brew demos to brewery tours and extravagant dinners with beer pairings.

Central rel="noopener noreferrer" Valley
Just outside of the San Francisco Bay Area is Stockton, an underrated destination rel="noopener noreferrer" perfect for a manly escape. Start by getting a cut and shave at the hip barber's shop known as Cal-Pine on the Avenue. rel="noopener noreferrer" For those travelling in the spring and summer months, catch a minor league Stockton Ports baseball game at the scenic Banner Island Ballpark. During the autumn and winter months, a high-intensity Stockton rel="noopener noreferrer" Heat hockey game at the Stockton Arena should be on the agenda. For those who enjoy motorsports, rel="noopener noreferrer" the fastest quarter-mile NASCAR track can be found here at the Stockton 99 Speedway. Make sure you end your day with a brew from the local favourite Channel Brewing Co.

Central Coast
A guys' weekend rel="noopener noreferrer" getaway on California’s beautiful central coast would not be complete without a round of golf at a world-renowned rel="noopener noreferrer" golf course. Start your trip at Pebble Beach Resorts, rel="noopener noreferrer" home to four renowned golf courses, world-class accommodation and rel="noopener noreferrer" dining. After a round with the pros, head down to the Oceano Dunes on Pismo State Beach and rent ATVs or Dune Buggies to get your rel="noopener noreferrer" heart pumping, and then cool off with a surfing session. If that’s not enough action for you, head down to Camarillo and rel="noopener noreferrer" skydive from 5,000 feet above the California coastline with Skydive Coastal California, or fly above the Camarillo rel="noopener noreferrer" farmlands with an ultralight aviation flight. End your trip with a brew in San Luis Obispo at SLO Brew Lofts.

Los Angeles County
For those looking to have a manly escape in Los Angeles County, make sure you rel="noopener noreferrer" stop at the beer mecca, Torrance. The city has 11 breweries, including national beer award winners, and some of the best beer in Southern California. One of these breweries rel="noopener noreferrer" is Zymurgy Brew Works, where the guests can rel="noopener noreferrer" make their own beer. While in town, make sure you catch some sun at the uncrowded, 1.5-mile stretch of Torrance Beach.

Inland Empire
When you think about taking a guys’ trip to Southern California, you might think about catching some sun and hitting the waves on the beach. Well, you might be surprised to know that it is also a great place for winter recreation. A day shredding the slopes, paired with refuelling at the Bullwheel Bar & Grill or the Foggy Goggle, make Mountain High Resort an ideal guys’ getaway destination.

San Diego County
Guys who are considering a sports-filled getaway are encouraged to plan their stay in San Diego. In addition to catching the Padres play a Major League Baseball game at Petco Park, San Diego offers the Sport of Kings twice a year at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, an amazing range of golf course terrains and views, plus sport fishing on the Pacific. After an exhilarating day of sports, you'll want to head out for a night on the town. San Diego offers many choices including local bars, intimate live music venues, stadiums and amphitheatres, and Vegas-style nightclubs with multilevel dance floors and rooftop bars.
